COVID-19: Group donates food items to 3,000 vulnerable Imo households

The Victims Support Fund (VSF), a non-governmental organisation, has donated food items, personal protective equipment and three boreholes to 3,000 vulnerable households and schools in Imo.
Presenting the items to the State Government in Owerri on Tuesday, the Chairman of the organisation, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.), said the gesture was intended to complement government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19.
Danjuma, represented by the Chairperson, VSF COVID-19 Taskforce, Mrs Toyosi Ogunsuji, said Imo was the 30th state to benefit from the fourth phase of the programme.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that each household would get 10kg of rice, 5kg of beans, 7kg of garri, 2kg of salt and 2.75 litres of vegetable oil.
The organisation also donated solar-powered borehole each to three schools in the state.
The schools included Comprehensive Secondary School, Umukabia in Ehime Mbano council area, Central School in Oru East council area and Central School, Okuku in Owerri West council area.
Other items included 18,000 bottles of hand sanitisers, 6,000 re-usable facemasks, 10,000 latex gloves, 290 pieces of hazmat suit, 290 boots and 290 pieces of noodles.
Danjuma said that the organisation had so far provided 57 boreholes to different communities across the country.
He said that the next phase of the donations would take place in Kwara, Kogi, Gombe, Sokoto, Rivers and Cross River states.
He commended Gov. Hope Uzodimma and his wife, Chioma, for not politicising the process of selecting the beneficiaries.
Responding, the governor, represented by his deputy, Prof. Placid Njoku, said the items would alleviate the plight of the beneficiaries occasioned by COVID-19.
He thanked Danjuma for bringing relief to Nigerians and described COVID-19 as a strange disease that ravaged the economy of many countries, leaving many people poorer.
“Many people died and so many spent their scarce resources attempting to get appropriate treatment for the challenges they faced with COVID-19.
“It is gratifying that Danujma found it necessary to establish the special fund for this purpose to get some food across the states of the nation,” Uzodinma said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups, Mrs Nkechinyere Ugwu, also lauded the organisation for the gesture.
Mr Jude Okparanozie, the Head Teacher of Central School, Okuku, which benefitted from the solar-powered boreholes, thanked the organisation for the kind gesture.
Okparanozie pledged that the school would guard the facility jealously.
Also, the President-General of Okuku Community, Mr Ike Daniel, commended VSF, the Federal and State Governments for siting the borehole in their area.
