The Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON), Minna Diocese, on Sunday conferred Golden Mother awards on 120 women who have distinguished themselves in the service of God and humanity.
The Bishop of Minna Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Fr.Martins Uzoukwu, announced this during the presentation of the awards to the recipients at the St Michael’s Catholic Cathedral, Minna.
The event which had the theme, “Mothers: Golden Jewels,” was part of activities to mark this year’s mother’s day.
Proper children upbringing was the crux of discussion at the event, as Uzoukwu urged women to inculcate the word of God in their children towards a better society.
He noted that women played important roles in the family and church, such as catering for the whole family and mentoring the children.
“You should not relent in bringing up your children accordding to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ for a better society,” he said.
The clergy who urged the recipients to cherish the gesture, said that it was also a call for more service to God and humanity.
The Chaplain of the organisation Very Rev. Fr. Emeka Amanchukwu, during his homily, congratulated the women on their day and implored them to continue to work hard in the vineyard of God.
He prayed for the release of captives in the hands of terrorists, as he thanked God for those that were recently released.
In her remarks, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Mrs Mary Noel-Berje, who was the mother of the day and one of the awardees, said that the event was an avenue for women to demonstrate their steadfastness.
Noel-Berje said mothers should endeavour to celebrate their day both in their families, the church and society because of their contributions to nation building.
She, however, reminded mothers of the need for good parenting, pointing out that the society is a reflection of what was inculcated in individuals.
Earlier, Dr Anthonia Ugochukwu, Diocesan President, CWON, said that the occasion was organised for the women to appreciate themselves and show gratitude to their past leaders as well as women who have distinguished themselves in service to the church and humanity.

Bello has laid a concrete political foundation needed for our great party to sustain elective structures in the forth coming general elections. “The present political structures in place will pave the way for a smooth conduct of transparent convention that will usher in new leaders to lead our party to victory in 2023. “We already know him. We know his political capability as a very tolerant, humble, listening leader. All these attributes will make him succeed in the task ahead,” he said. Kolo urged Bello to remain focused and deliver the National Convention as promised to “excite our loyal party members and disappoint our opponents and critics,” he said. The party chieftain advised the CECPC to restrict access to the national convention only to those prescribed by article 12(1); sub-section I to IX of the APC constitution. Kolo also called on party supporters to continue to support and cooperate with the leadership of the party in its effort to reposition the party for optimal political growth.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlights of the event included a performance by the nine deaconries that make up the diocese, decoration and presentation of certificates to the awardees and cutting of the cake, among others.
