The European Union may soon agree to disburse additional 500 million euros (500 million dollars) to fund the military needs of Ukraine.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Friday.

“Another 500 million euros of our contribution to military support to Ukraine, the European Peace Facility will double it support by 500 million euros,’’ he said ahead of the informal meeting of EU leaders.”

He expressed confidence that the member states would agree on the additional package promptly.

On Feb. 28, EU leaders agreed to allocate 500 million euros for armaments for Ukraine within the framework of the European Peace Facility.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on Feb. 24, after the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic appealed for help in defending themselves against Kiev.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the operation was targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only.
