OAU VC, students’ union fume as undergraduate dies after falling into soakaway

The Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunmodede, is speaking tough after one of the institution’s students fell inside a soak away and died.

Its Students’ Union is also not taking the matter lightly.

The tragedy occurred months after a postgraduate student there, Timothy Adegoke, was allegedly murdered in a hotel he stayed.

The current victim, Heritage Ajibola, is a 200-level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, identified as Miss Ajibola Ayomikun.

The incident was said to have taken place in BVER, one of the private hostels in the students’ village.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, its management is saddened by the development.

“When the news got to us, we immediately mobilised the emergency responders from the University, Osun State, and the OAU Teaching Hospital who through concerted efforts got the student out.

“She was immediately taken to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex where she was certified dead,” he said.

In a statement also, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, was said to lead the varsity’s management team to the scene, sympathised with the students and commiserated with the parents of the deceased.

Ogunbodede, who described the incidence as “tragic and unacceptable”, promised to “critically look into the circumstances that led to the student’s death and mete out appropriate sanctions against those involved or whoever is found culpable”.

The VC, therefore, appealed to the students to remain calm and law-abiding as the police, who have been briefed, are also investigating.
