Aisha Buhari visits Senate to witness laying of Constitution Review report

Aisha Buhari donates food items to 6,000 patients across 11 Hospitals in Kano November 5, 2019 11:37 pm by ahmed.musa - Nigeria - Patients By Ahmed Ubandoma Abuja, Nov. 5, 2019 (NAN) The First Lady’s NGO, Aisha Buhari Foundation (ABF), on Tuesday presented a nutritional food items to six thousand (6,000) patients across eleven hospitals within Kano metropolis. Suleiman Haruna, the Director of Information in the First Lady’s office, made this known in a statement in Abuja. He said that a Senior official of the foundation, Fatima Rafindadi, distributed the items to the patients on behalf of the First Lady. Rafindadi was quoted as saying that the mission was in continuation of the Aisha Buhari Foundation’s determination to provide succour to the needy, especially those on the sick bed. Rafindadi urged Nigerians to support the sick people, especially some of whom may find it difficult to pay their hospital bills and feed. ”Beyond treatment and medication, this category of people need love, care and for me as Nutrition Ambassador I think there is a need to always support their nutritional requirements so that they will recover faster” she said. Responding on behalf of the Hospitals, the Chief Medical Director of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, Dr Hussaini Muhammad, expressed gratitude to the Aisha Buhari Foundation for the humanitarian gesture. According to Muhammad, the gesture will encourage other privileged Nigerians to do more for the less privileged ones. ” This Hospital is the oldest and busiest hospital in Kano state because we receive patients from long distances . “The hospital is seriously in need of medical care and this intervention will benefit the patients. “The hospital has large traffic of patients because most of their services are free,” he said. He, however, expressed gratitude to the foundation for the kind gesture. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other hospitals visited by the foundation were Hasiya Bayero Hospitals, Dala Hospital, Jakara Hospital, Dawanau Hospital, Bela Hospital, Muhammad Jidda Hospital, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Waziri Gidado Hospital, Abubakar Imam Hospital and Mariya Sunusi Hospital all in Kano

First Lady Aisha Buhari on Wednesday, was at the Senate to witness the laying of the report of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.

The President’s wife was accompanied by the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed and a delegation of Nigerian women.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, immediately after referring a bill for an Act to Amend the Federal High Court Act Cap F134 to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, suspended Rule 12(1) , Privileges of the Floor and invoked Rule 1(b) to admit the First Lady and her delegation into the chamber.

The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege (APC-Delta ), Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Alteration to the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, laid the report.

Lawan, in a short remark after the report was laid, said the visit by the First Lady was to show support for a bill to have more female parliamentarians at the federal and state legislatures.

He said:“the First Lady’s visit is to show support for a bill for more female parliamentarians in both chambers in the Senate and the House and the State Legislatures.

“This, we believe, will help in nation building as such significant participation by our women will add value to not only legislation but the much desired and needed national development.

“For us as a nation, our motto is Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress. We believe that all hands must be on deck to ensure the participation of each and every segment of our society.”

The Senate President, assured the First Lady that Ninth Assembly, while voting on the amendments to the constitution as contained in the ad-hoc committee’s report, would ensure that women participation in governance is commensurate with their population.

“At the moment, you’ll all agree with me that our women have not been able to get that level of participation commensurate with their population as reflected in our demography.

“Therefore, what we are trying to do (Amendment of the Constitution) will go through voting later to complete the process in the National Assembly”, Lawan said.
