As star fuji musician, Saheed Osupa, earns a B.Sc. Political Science from the University of Ibadan, AKEEM LASISI writes on the artiste’s robust cultured talent on which the western education will lean

Before now, he had been philosophising musically. Now, popular fuji musician, Saheed Osupa, is philosophising intellectually.

Many will believe that he sure deserves to do so as he has just emerged a university graduate.

He has graduated in Political Science from the iconic University of Ibadan, as the climax of a programme he started some four years ago.

Announcing the feat on Friday, Osupa, who is respected to be a very deep and cultural artiste, oozes out motivationally (SIC):

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase; just take the first step for the best view comes after the hardest climb!

Signing out in style.

Alihamdulilai Robil Alamin.

I am grateful .

BSc Political Science in the bag.

University of Ibadan!

Recté Sapere fons!”

Many people have been reacting to the development, with almost all of them congratulating him.
Some are wondering why he chose to study Political Science and not music, though – while others say there is nothing bad in diversifying, with a few even noting that he already deserves a professorship in music.

For the Ibadan, Oyo State native, it has indeed been an interesting journey.

He has been in the limelight for close to three decades, alongside his contemporary, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma.

The two, as well as the evergreen Wasiu Ayinde k1de Ultimate, and a few other surviving voices like those of Adewale Ayuba and Malaika, are the reasons that fuji continues to glow.

More importantly, Osupa remains prolific, experimentalist, deep and loved.

His ascension on the intellectual turf, incidentally, was ushered in by a video that establishes him as one of the greatest things that have happened to Yoruba music.

In the video shared on Facebook, he is in an encounter with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

While spontaneously celebrating the monarch with fuji in his ancient palace, he musically journeys into some reserved arenas in the Ife sacred world.

This pleasantly surprises the Ooni as Osupa is not singing like an initiate.

Of course the reaction further inspires the artiste, who now digs into every nook and cranny of the Ife spiritual heritage.

Many people who have watched the video cannot hide their renewed respect for him, bathing him with enviable accolades.

For Osupa, therefore, his future can only get better with the acquisition of the degree – as he already commands a huge pillar of native intelligence on which it will rest.
