Just-named FIFA’s Best Player, Robert Lewandowski, is sober at the achievements he recorded in Bundesliga in 2021.
According to him, itis so great that it seems unreal.
The Bayern Munich and Poland striker was named the best men’s player in 2021 at a FIFA awards ceremony on Monday.
The forward beat Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to secure the award for the second consecutive year.
The Pole broke Gerd Muller’s long-standing single-season Bundesliga record with an unprecedented haul of 41 goals.
In all competitions, he scored 48 goals in 40 games for Bayern Munich in the 2020/2021 season.
“Thank you very much, it is a great honour,” Lewandowski said as he received the trophy from Bayern Munich chief Oliver Kahn, coach Julian Nagelsmann and board member for sport, Hasan Salihamidzic.
He added, “Everything that happened last year, the Bundesliga record —- I would never have dared to dream about that.”
In 2020, Lewandowski won the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award. He has been named to the UEFA Team of the Year twice and the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season four times, and is the third-highest goalscorer in the history of the competition. Lewandowski has been named the VDV Bundesliga Player of the Season a record five times. He has scored over 300 goals in the Bundesliga (second-highest goalscorer of all time in Bundesliga history, behind only Gerd Müller’s 365 Bundesliga goals), having reached the century mark quicker than any other foreign player, and is the league’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer. Moreover, he has won the Bundesliga Top Scorer Award in six seasons, most prominently in the 2020–21 Bundesliga where he scored 41 goals in a single campaign, breaking Gerd Müller’s previous Bundesliga record of 40 goals, set in 1971–72. On 30 November 2021, he finished second in the Ballon d’Or, just 33 points behind the winner Lionel Messi.
