The Senate has removed the controversial direct primary system from the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

This suggests that it has bowed to pressure from governors who have been strongly opposed to compulsory direct primary.

President Muhammadu Buhari has also expressed disapproval of it, arguing it would be too expensive to practise.

Observers would say the lawmakers are largely at the losing end as they are believed to have rooted for it to whittle down the power of the governors who dominate parties at the state level, giving even the senators little or no say.
