Osun State University has provided insight into why one of its students, Victor Oke, was set ablaze while in hospital over the weekend.

According to its management, Oke was set ablaze by cultists who were irked because he refused to join them.

It thus called for the arrest of suspected cultists who set Oke ablaze.

Suspected cultists attacked Victor Oke over the weekend as they shot and macheted him.

But he was later set ablaze before he was rescued to a hospital.

A statement by the University Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, said Victor is a part-time final year Political Science student.

Although a report noted that Oke was still alive but badly burnt, Adesoji noted: “We received a report of an attack on one of our part time final year Political Science student, OKE Ademiju Victor in the late hours of Saturday, 11th December, 2021 around Akede, Osunlepo area of Osogbo.

“The University noticed that Oke Ademiju Victor was absent for his final paper in the afternoon and decided to contact his parents. It was later discovered that he was attacked by unknown cultists in the early hours of Saturday.

“It was gathered that some of the eye witnesses living in the area where the incident happened reported that they heard OKE Ademiju Victor shouting that he is not joining their cult group while they continue to hit him with cutlasses, hard stones and attempted to burn him, partially succeeding before he was eventually rescued.”

“We had since been following up with the parent and it is confirmed that he was rushed to the University’s teaching hospital for treatment and later moved to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.”
