Harmattan: Sellers of second-hand clothing make brisk business in Kaduna

As the harmattan season intensifies in parts of the country, dealers in second-hand clothes are making brisk sales in Kaduna.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) check on Tuesday in Kaduna Central market, Kasuwan Bachi, Sabo and Narayi markets, revealed impressive patronage of second-hand warm wears.
Some of the sellers told NAN in separate interviews that the cold weather accounted for the increased patronage.
The sellers said their business premises are usually a beehive of activities during this season.
Mrs Julina Ugo, a second-hand clothes seller at Kaduna central market, told NAN that she had to engage additional two workers to enable her meet customers’ demand.
“Customers troop to my shop as early as 7a.m for patronage. Warm clothing is mostly sought during the cold as most people will want to keep their bodies warm.
“Business has been booming because parents buy sweaters, jackets, headwarmers, gloves and socks for themselves and their children,” she added.
Mallam Faruk Umar, another seller at the popular Kasuwan Bachi, said patronage increased as other sellers from other parts of the metropolis come to buy the clothes in bales.
“During this season, we usually record boom in sales because the wears are always in high demand.
Ibrahim Yuguda, seller of second-hand clothing at Sabo, on his part said that he made an average profit of N10,000 to N20,000 daily.
“My customer cut across both genders, including people from all works of life.
“Students preferred hoods, track down, handwarmers, gloves and sucks while older customers buy sweaters, sucks and handwarmers,” Yuguda added.
Miss Sarah Francis, a student, told NAN that the second-hand clothes, especially the warm ones, are better than the new ones because of their quality.
“For some people, it might be for the less price but sincerely, most of the wears are foreign and more authentic.
“I prefer second-hand sweaters or jacket anytime,” she said.

Malam Sani Gambo, a commercial motorcycle operator, said although second-hand clothing are considered cheaper, he preferred them because they protect you from the cold.
“Due to the nature of my business, I prefer second hand gloves, handwarmers and jackets because they are thicker,” he explained.
