Celebrities who wedded at the popular Ikoyi Registry, Lagos, have been reacting after a Federal High Court declared marriages conducted there invalid.
Among them are Adekunle Gold, Banky W and Daddy Freeze.
Justice D. E. Osiagor, held that only the local government marriage registries are empowered to do such by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He submitted that the conduct of marriages and issuance of certificates are statutorily the job of the local governments as provided by the law.
The judge added that the acts of the federal government through the Ministry of Interior, operating marriage registries is beyond their powers and held that all marriages conducted by federal marriage registries or through their agents are illegal and invalid.
It said it was the local governments constitutionally empowered to do so.
Eti Osa Local Government had dragged the FG to court.
Reacting, Adekunle Gold, who is married to a co-artiste, Simi, jovially demanded a refund of the fee he paid.
On his part, Banky W, also married to an actress, referred to his wife Adesuwa as ‘Baby Mama’ while Daddy Freeze said he now knew why his first marriage failed: it was held at an illegal registry.
