Before now, there had been disquiet over how government officials and other privileged stakeholders relate to phenomenally excelling students or graduates.
While winners in the entertainment circle are, for instance, often bountifully rewarded, their counterparts in book matters get paltry attention.
No wonder, there was complaint when Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, gifted Laycon, a BBNaija winner, money and a house after he had got the N60m prize for the reality show.
Laycon is an Ogun indigene.
But the governor, on Wednesday, showed that he does not discriminate against academic excellence when he uniquely rewarded Joy Adesina, who is the best graduating medical student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Joy is also from the state that has produced icons in many fields – including the late Obafemi Awolowo, Hubert Ogunde, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, MKO Abiola, and living legends like Professor Wole Soyinka as well as former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
At a brief ceremony at the Governor’s Office Abeokuta, Abiodun announced the following for Dr Adesina who recorded several distinctions in the course of her medical training at OAU :
1. a Bungalow at Ogun State Housing Estate
2. N5 Million
3. Award for Residency studies at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, OOUTH.
Of course, many believe that Joy deserves all the good things for her brilliance, commitment and success.
