Prof. Oyaziwo Aluede, President, Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria has called on parents to ensure proper upbringing of their children for proper national development.
Aluede made the call on Wednesday at Gwagwalada, FCT when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“The involvement of youths in drug abuse, immorality, moral decadence has become rampant in the society because of lack of proper monitoring and counselling by parents.
“Everybody needs counselling. Besides that, parents need to guide their children properly so that they will be useful citizens for national development and unity.
“Goal-setting will only come after a child might have received adequate upbringing from parents to succeed in life,’’ he said.
Aluede also advised youths to search for mentors in their chosen careers in order to become successful in life.
“Parents have a greater role to play in child upbringing and mentorship than peer groups and the school environment.
“Mentorship is all about guiding the young ones on how to do things in the right manner instead of doing it blindly.
“Ill implore all parents to ensure proper upbringing of their wards, especially girls, as they need to be properly monitored and guided,’’ he told NAN.
He also called on government to initiate empowerment programmes that would enable youths to engage in self-employment as well as discourage them from lawlessness and promiscuity.
Aluede charged community leaders to monitor the movement and activities of strangers in their communities as it would help to sort out and avoid bad elements and deviants.
