United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has welcomed an intra-Libyan agreement on the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces, said his spokesman.
Guterres welcomed Friday’s agreement reached by the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) in Geneva on a comprehensive action plan for the gradual, balanced and sequenced process of the withdrawal of mercenaries.
The withdrawal of mercenaries, foreign fighters and forces from Libyan territory, according to Stephane Dujarric in a statement is the cornerstone in the implementation of the cease-fire agreement signed on Oct. 23, 2020 in Geneva.
The Secretary-General applauded the unity of purpose prevailing within the 5+5 JMC and called on all Libyan and international actors to work toward the implementation of this action plan.
The deployment of an initial team of UN cease-fire monitors would contribute to creating the conditions for a successful implementation of the action plan, the statement said.
The statement said that the Secretary-General reiterated the firm commitment of the UN to support the Libyan people.
