Multi-talented cinematographer, Sanjo Adegoke, has revisited his experience shooting ‘Ekun Iyawo’, the performance bridal poetry produced by Akeem Lasisi, in collaboration with Mudasir Alabi.
‘Ekun Iyawo’ is the traditional poetry with which the Yoruba bride(of old) bids her family farewell as she sojourns to her husband’s house. She chants the praise of her mother and father, expresses anxiety about the great journey into marriage, while also expressing hope and celebrating her coming of age. As is exhibited here, the bride’s friends often perform with her.
According to the Lagos-based singer, music producer, editor, cinematographer and director – Sanjo – shooting ‘Ekun Iyawo’ was engaging because it was a peculiar production.
“You know it is a multifaceted production. On the one hand it is poetry performance. It is like shooting a music video on the other hand. The dancing, acting etc made it like a film. So, we had to be at the end of our wit to ensure we reflect all these features,’ Sanjo says.
The cinematographer who has worked on many big projects with Nollywood stars like Desmond Elliot, Muyiwa Ademola and Dayo musa, adds that the competence and experience of the actors in cast, however, made a difference.
He adds, “You know, with an actress like Kabirah Kafidipe, Feyikemi Bodunrin-Olayinka, Allwell Ademola and Akeem Lasisi himself, who is as a matter of fact a good actor, apart from giving you a good disposition, you are bound to get something good.”
While Sanjo shot the major part of the work in some parts of Lagos, another Lagos-based director, musician and producer, Olatunde Obajeun, handled some additional scenes.
The project was directed by Sunday Ogunyemi.
