When lightning strikes someone dead, what happens?
Can the family straightaway carry the corpse for burial?
This may not be so in Yorubaland as the Chairman of the Ifelodun Local Government Area, Hassan Okanlawon, must have learnt by now.
Tragedy struck in Ikirun on Sunday when lightning killed two girls.
They deceased, whose identity have yet to be known, were said to be crossing a field when the lightning struck, killing them instantly.
As ‘The Nation’ reports, Okanlawon, who confirmed the incident, said the girls were found dead on the playground of an Arabic school after lightning struck.
Okanlawon was quoted as saying that the deceased were living with their grandmother in the area, adding that when he visited the scene he was told the two girls were asked to buy ingredients to cook dinner.
“On their way, lightning struck them and they both died on the spot. They were living with their grandmother. One of them was from Delta State and the other, Ondo State. I was told that we could not immediately remove their bodies. They said Sango adherents must perform some rites. I was informed that some Sango worshippers from Ede were on their way to the scene.”
Believed to be the god of thunder, Sango is known by adherents to be the custodian of lightning.
Anything about it is thus lined to the fiery god.
