Over 30 years that brain drain first hit Nigeria, the plague is still waxing stronger.

It may even have assumed the height of generational brain drain, going by the story of Vivian Okolo, who left the medical school 11 years ago.

She is one of the doctors who, on Tuesday August 24, rushed to Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, where the Saudi Arabian Government is currently recruiting doctors from Nigeria.

This is decades after brain drain has been seeing the country’s health workers fleeing.

Okolo’s generational story is, however, a bit peculiar.

On getting to the recruitment venue, she met her old lecturer: the man who taught her medicine 11 years ago.

For her, nothing can be more bewildering.

She exclaimed: “Concerning the number of doctors here, I am heartbroken. When I came in here, I wanted to cry. Over 90 per cent of the people you see here are consultants.

“Consultants are the ones who train resident doctors. When they leave, who will train the upcoming doctors? But you can’t blame them, because we all are looking for better conditions of service.

“I left medical school in 2011; my teacher who taught me in the medical school is here, a seasoned paediatrics consultant.”
