The United Nations Security Council, scheduled to meet in an emergency session on Monday, will discuss increasing violence in Jerusalem, the Times of Israel reported, citing Israeli diplomats.
The council is to meet behind closed doors after a request from Tunisia, three Security Council diplomats told the newspaper.
The situation in Jerusalem’s Old City escalated over the weekend, with medics saying around 600 Palestinians have been injured in violent clashes with Israeli security forces since Friday evening.
Confrontations took place at the Damascus Gate and entrance to the Old City and around the holy site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.
Several arrests were made.
Near the Damascus Gate, Palestinian demonstrators threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at security forces, according to police.
Police used rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades, according to media reports.
Meanwhile, Palestinians and Arab Israelis demonstrated on Sunday night against Israeli policies in Jerusalem, with more clashes reported.
At least 25 people were wounded and 23 people arrested, the Times of Israel said.
The situation in the West Bank and Arab-dominated East Jerusalem has been tense since the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month.
Many Palestinians are angry because Israeli police had cordoned off areas of the Old City.
In addition, some Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah are facing eviction from their homes by Israeli authorities, further heightening tensions.
There is concern about more potential violence on Israel’s Jerusalem Day on Monday.
Israel celebrates the conquest of the eastern half of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War on that day.
