In English language, pronouns are relatively closed.
This means that, unlike nouns and verbs, they are not easily generated.
It was only not too long that ‘they’, which is plural, became adapted to refer to he or she, when the the speaker or writer wants to avoid repetition or is not sure of the sex.
Example:
If the person comes, let him or her leave a message for me.
If the person comes, let them leave a message for me.
Now, American singer, Demi Lovato has expanded the capacity of the plural they/them/
She has revealed that she will now identify as non-binary, using the pronouns they/them.
Demi, who formerly announced in March 2021 that she is pansexual (which means the attraction to other people, regardless of their gender) wrote on Twitter:
“I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”
The American singer said they had been doing some healing and self-reflective work over the past year and a half and that they are still learning so therefore doesn’t claim to be an expert or spokesperson on the subject.
They also wrote; “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know that I am sending so much love your way.”
Many fans have described the singer as a role model and are in full support of her choices.
This isn’t surprising because Demi has always been a supporter of LGBT rights.
The singer is known to have cancelled tour dates in US cities in 2016 after an anti-LGBT bill was passed in North Carolina.
