Cancer has claimed the life of another prominent Nigerian, Innocent Chukwuma, who was the head of the Ford Foundation West Africa.
He breathed his last on Saturday, April 3, after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, an aggressive cancer of the blood.
He was 56.
His case has thus proved cancer to be a killer disease, having consumed prominent people like a former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Dora Akunyili; and a top aide of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Oronto Douglas.
According to ‘The Nation’, Chukwuma’s long time friend and associate, Edetaen Ojo, confirmed the sad incident.
Ojo, the Executive Director of the Media Rights Agenda(MRA), said: “With profound shock & sadness, I regret to inform you that Innocent Chukwuma passed away a few hours ago, in the evening of April 3. May his soul rest in peace.”
Chukwuma read religious studies at the University of Nigeria (UNN) but gained prominence as a student union leader.
He was a founding member of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) before he started CLEEN foundation.
