Gov Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state has assured non indigenes living in the state of their safety, following the recent violence that erupted after protests in Billiri Local Government Area of the state.
The protests, which led to the imposition of 24-hour curfew in Billiri LGA, was over alleged delay in the appointment of a new paramount ruler of Tangale chiefdom.
Yahaya, who gave the assurance in Gombe, on Tuesday, when he hosted leaders of the various group said the protection of Nigerians remained the responsibility of government.
According to him, the recent violence that led to killings and destruction of properties would have led to reprisals if not for the effort of security personnel and the understanding shown by religious and traditional leaders across the state.
He stated that following fears of reprisal attacks, his administration deemed it fit to engage and “ assure you all that I will do my best to guarantee your safety and that of your children and properties.”
“ I will do whatever to give you cover, protection and ensure that the spirit of the Constitution is implemented to the letter. I want to encourage you not to fear,” he said.
While calling on the groups to continue to live in peace with one another without fear, the governor said “ Gombe is your home, feel free and remain at home; we are ready to protect you.”
He said he had met with security personnel and given them orders to ensure that everyone was protected in line with the provision of the Constitution of the country.
On his part, the special adviser to the governor on inter-community relations, Mr Cornelius Awuzie, thanked Gov Yahaya for the “ warm reception and concern for the protection of the lives of non indigenes living in Gombe state.”
Awuzie charged the people to help maintain peace and harmony in the state, while urging social media users to refrain from spreading fake news on social media as that could escalate issues.
Also, Alh. Abdulrahim Alao, Oba Yoruba, Gombe state, appreciated the governor, while urging the people of the state to see peace as “ a collective property needed to bring development to the state.”
Alao pleaded with Gov Yahaya to ensure that whatever was needed to sustain peaceful coexistence in the state was done in the interest of everyone.
The leaders of the Igbo, Igala, Edo, Delta and other communities were also present at the meeting.
