Nigeria’s best-achieving governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, is dead.

The politician who achieved great feats in all areas of life when he was the governor of Lagos State (October 1, 1979 – December 31, 1979) under the banner of the Unity Party of Nigeria, died in Lagos at the age of 91.

He was known to be prudent in and out of office.

One of the major areas Jakande wrote his name in gold is education.
Before he became governor, the state faced with acute shortage in schools.

He immediately launched into expansion and construction, to the extent that, within a short time, he multiplied facilities and enrolment.

In various parts of Lagos are also, till today, ‘Jakande Estate’ as he built several, which he gave out at affordable rates, giving all classes of Lagosians an opportunity to benefit.

Jakande founded the Lagos State University and other monuments like the Lagos Television.

He was so visionary that, as of 1983, he had started the process of constructing metrol rail, whichj was, however, truncated by the Buhari Idiagbon military junta that chased away the civilians in December 1983.
