Akwa Ibom State Government has cautioned residents on safety as the dry season continues with severe heat waves across the country.

The Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, gave the caution while presenting relief materials to victims of fire disaster in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.

Ekpo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr Nkopuruk Ekaiko, warned the residents to desist from indiscriminate bush burning to avoid further fire disasters.

The deputy governor noted that given the present economic realities, there was need for everyone to take full responsibility of safety in their operational environments.

Ekpo said the items were made available through the collaboration of the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He said that the aim of distributing relief materials was to ameliorate the pains of those who suffered huge losses during the recent fire outbreak.

He said the government, both at the state and federal levels would continue to identify with the plight of the masses, especially during emergencies.

In his remarks, Mr Williams Mkpah, the Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Council, receiving the items commended the state and Federal Government through NEMA for what he called an exemplary government action.

He said that the gesture would go a long way to resettle the affected people.

He noted the council would continue to sensitise the people to be safety conscious in order to prevent any further emergency in the area.

Items worth several millions of naira made up of roofing sheets, mattresses, blankets, garri, salt, rice, cement, and several other food/household items were distributed.

The inferno happened on Jan. 2, in Mkpanak community of Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
