Several Swiss regions started vaccination campaigns against COVID-19 on Wednesday, four days before vaccination is scheduled to start in the surrounding EU, the local health authority said.
One of the first people in Switzerland to get a shot against the COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, was a 90-year-old woman who lives in an elderly care home near Lucerne.
Elderly people and patients with pre-existing health conditions will get the vaccine first, followed by health workers and those who share a household with vulnerable people, according to the Swiss immunisation strategy.
Non-EU country Switzerland approved the vaccine developed by the German firm BioNTech and its U.S. partner Pfizer on Saturday.
The first 110,000 doses arrived in Switzerland on Tuesday.
The army has been tasked with distributing the vials across the country.
