A young man in Jigawa State now faces a court judgement of N20,000 fine and 20 strokes of the cane for libelling Jigawa State Governor, Badaru Abubakar, on Facebook.

The Magistrate’s court sitting in Dutse, the state capital, sentenced the man, Sabi’u Ibrahim Chamo, to six months in prison, but with the option of the fine and caning.

According to reports, Chamo was first arrested on Christmas eve December 24 and detained before he was charged to court for failure to substantiate the allegations he made on Facebook.

“He had alleged that the governor had duped many APC aspirants by collecting their money to give them party tickets.

During the trial, after the first information was read to him, Chamo pleaded guilty to the charge and the court sentenced him to six months in prison, with options of payment of N20,000 fine and 20 strokes of cane to serve as a deterrent to others,” a report adds.
