The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said that he cannot for any reason go to the house of a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
He said this in Lagos on Tuesday, in response to a statement by Obasanjo that if Adams wanted a reconciliation with him, it would be in his Abeokuta house.
Obasanjo had said this to convince people that a meeting recently held in Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s house, with he and Adams present, was not about reconciliation.
The former President also said his principle and way of life were not compatible with Adams’
Adams, who is also the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, was arrested during Obasanjo administration in September 2001 by the police for alleged violence in some parts of the country linked to his group.
He noted: “I don’t know what baba Obasanjo meant by my way of life. I agree with him that we don’t have the same character because he’s not a progressive. Obasanjo will not like the character of any progressive Nigerian. I have never at any time requested to meet Obasanjo as he claimed. I initially didn’t want to attend the meeting when Chief Ayo Adebanjo told me. But I decided to honour the invitation because Chief Adebanjo is one the Yoruba elders I respect so much.
“He (Obasanjo) stated in his statement that whoever feels he needs a reconciliatory meeting with him should come to his residence in Abeokuta. I don’t have the need for any reconciliatory meeting with him. That one has been foreclosed. I cannot even go to his house.”
