Femi, son of afrobeat music legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has painted an intriguing picture of the way the
father brought him up.
He said Fela’s way of raising his children was so unconventional that he did not send him to school.
According to Femi, who is also an afrobeat star, the father used him as an experiment.
He said, “Fela wanted to use me as an experiment. He wanted to prove that I could be successful without going to school. My mother said NO. But when I became successful, he said, ‘Didn’t I tell you?”
Femi reflected on his childhood on Thursday, when he was hosted by TVC as a guest on ‘Your View’.
He said although the way of his father was wild, his mother always provided the balance, adding that it was like a day before he (Fela) married 27 women that he informed his mother, asking her to be there if she wanted.
Femi added that the mum did not, however, stop to love and admire Fela, while also urging her children to love and adore him.
Femi said he was giving quality to his own children, citing the example of Made, whom, he said, he is so sophisticated in his knowledge of music that he (the father) was trailing him in some areas.
As Phenomenal.com.ng earlier reported, Femi also used the encounter (‘Your View’) to urge parents not to transfer aggression and hate to their kids:
“Whatever happens between the couple should never spill over to the children. I have seven children, but I’m not the best of friends with some of their mothers. Yet, I don’t bring my children up to hate their mothers.
“Women too cheat. Yet, because the woman cheated, did she kill anybody? Things happen in this world.
“I brought up Made. Made loves his mother. Made’s mother and I, today, are the best of friends. So, when you start to fight, you don’t sell hate to the kids,” he said.
