Coronavirus has stung the Nigerian Army as it has lost a Major General to the pandemic.
He was Major General Johnson Olu Irefin, who was the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Bori Camp, Port Harourt, Rivers State.
He died in Abuja after testing positive for COVID-19, reports said.
While more official details are still being awaited, Irefin’s demise was said to have thrown the division into a panic.
His death would remind observers of the havoc that the disease is still capable of reaping, and the fact that several prominent Nigerians are among those whom it has killed.
Among them were the former Chiedf of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, former Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi; and a former senator, Buruji Kashamu.
Meanwhile, emerging information from the Nigerian Army indicates that Irefin died during the Chief of Army Staff Conference holding in Abuja.
An official statement said to this effect: “The Nigerian Army wishes to inform members of the public that due to resurgence of COVID 19 Pandemic in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja in what appears to be a second wave of infection cycle and the unfortunate incident on Tuesday 8 December 2020, where an officer participating in the ongoing Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020 here in Abuja tested positive to COVID 19, the remaining activities of the conference have therefore been immediately cancelled.
“All the participants have been mandated to immediately proceed on self-isolation in line with the Federal Government’s protocol for COVID 19 and to prevent any further spread of the disease.
“All inconveniences hereby regretted, please. Thanks for your usual understanding and cooperation.”
