As the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspends its nine-month-old strike, its President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has warned that it could resume the action if the Federal Government fails to honour its agreement with the union.
Ogunyemi, indeed, said the union would not give any notice before such if the authorities reneged on their promises.
Among the agreements reached are the payment of the teachers’ salaries while on the industrial action, making available N40bn as the Earned Allowance and N30bn for the revitalisation of the university system, bringing the total payment to N70bn.
The strike had been the most prolonged, as the lecturers insisted that the agreements they reached with the FG on the revitalisation of universities, since 2009, could no more be rolled over.
They appeared to have been hardened by by the government’s persistent breaking of the covenants.
In the course of it, some lecturers broke away and formed another association.
They received the support of the FG but this made little or no impact because their call for resumption yielded no fruits.
