6 killed in South African multi-vehicle crash

At least six people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash late Wednesday in Mokopane of Limpopo Province, said the provincial transport and safety department on Thursday.

“We lost six people when a truck allegedly failed to stop at the robot and then smashed into five vehicles,” the Limpopo Transport spokesperson, Matome Taueatsoala, said on Thursday.

Taueatsoala said the truck then caught fire and hit four pedestrians.

“The four pedestrians died on the spot including the driver of the truck and the passenger who was in a truck,” he said.

One driver who survived was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Taueatsoala said Limpopo was already experiencing a high volume of cars on the roads.

As the festive season approaches, he said the authorities would ensure police visibility on the roads and carry out plans to reduce fatalities.
