Iran on Monday urged its neighbours not to rely on the support of U.S President, Donald Trump, now that he has lost the U.S presidential election, and to turn to Iran instead.

“Trump’s gone in 70 days. But we’ll remain here forever,’’ Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on Twitter.

“Betting on outsiders to provide security is never a good gamble. We extend our hand to our neighbors for dialogue to resolve differences,’’ Zarif wrote.

Observers said the message was mainly aimed at three Gulf States namely: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), whose relationship with Iran deteriorated during Trump’s rule.

Iran signaled its readiness to cooperate with the United States’ new leadership under Democrat Joe Biden, but also urged the U.S to return to the 2015 nuclear deal and lift sanctions imposed by Trump.

“We are realistic about the United States and we pay attention to its actions, not to speculation and media analysis,“ Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Saeid Khatibzadeh said in comments carried by news agency ISNA.

Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018.

The deal was supposed to ensure that Iran only uses its nuclear programme to attain a low level of uranium enrichment for civil purposes and cannot build an atomic bomb, in exchange for lifting international sanctions.

Biden has been declared the winner of Tuesday’s presidential election in the U.S, although Trump has refused to concede victory.

Trump has several legal challenges pending, but analysts are sceptical that they could affect the result in any significant way.
