The Kaduna State Government has constituted an 8-member judicial panel of inquiry to investigate acts of brutality by the police in the state.
A statement issued on Friday in Kaduna by Muyiwa Adekeye, Special Adviser to Gov. Nasir El-Rufai on Media and Communication, said that the panel was constituted in line with the resolution of the National Economic Council (NEC).
The NEC had mandated state governors to investigate the matter and take other steps to ensure accountability in the operations of police units in their states.
Those appointed include Justice David-Shiri Wyom (rtd.) as Chairman, AIG Lawal Tanko (rtd), and Rebecca Sako-John and Mustapha Jumare, both representing the Civil Society.
Others are Yakubu Umar Ibrahim, representing students,
Nathaniel Sheyi-Bagudu, youths; Inna Binta-Audu, National Human Rights Commission; and Hajara Abubakar, acting Director, Citizens Right Department of the Ministry of Justice, representing the state Attorney-General.
The statement added that the government would constitute a Special Security and Human Rights Committee to monitor activities of security agencies in the state.
“Representatives of civil society and youth groups will be appointed to join the Governor and heads of security agencies deployed in Kaduna State on the Special Security and Human Rights Committee that will oversee the activities of security agencies.
“This will be followed by the appointment of members of the Human Rights Complaints Team and the posting of officers to a Complaints Office to enable members of the public lodge reports on the activities of security agencies.”
It said that such reports would be forwarded to the Special Security and Human Rights Committee for appropriate action.
