The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello has called for stakeholders’ collaboration in the fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
The Emir made the call in Gusau on Wednesday at a one-day training for Technical Working Group (TWG) of GBV in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was organised by the State Ministry of Women, Children and Social Development, supported by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).
The Emir, represented by Majidadin Gusau, Alhaji Danbuba Muhammad said there is need for active collaboration from all stakeholders to reduce GBV in the society.
Bello explained that women were major victims of GBV, and action must be taken to reduce such inhuman act in the society.
He called on parents to allow their female children to study in tertiary institutions to ensure development of the society.
The Emir commended the ministry, donor agencies and all stakeholders working towards eradicating the GBV challenge.
“As costodians of the people, l am giving assurance of Gusau emirate council’s commitments to support any activity in this regard,” the Emir said.
In her remark, the Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Gummi thanked the UNFPA for its support.
Gummi described GBV as one of the major global challenges to women development, noting that the menace constituted major human rights violation.
“We are working with all stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive response to prevent and mitigate these risks as quickly as possible,”she said.
Speaking on be behalf of the CSOs and NGOs that participated in the training, Malam Bachire Sarkin-Fulani said the training was to build the capacity of the TWG members, to tackle the menace.
Sarkin-Fulani, who is the State Coordinator Child Protection Network, an NGO, said the meeting would provide comprehensive response and report sharing to tackle GBV in the state.
“We shall continue to provide the technical support to the ministry to ensure that various programmes in the fight against GBV in the state are achieved,” Sarkin-Fulani said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Halima Muhammad, represented by Bello Sauna, assured of the commitment of the ministry to address the menace of GBV in the state.
