The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Wednesday approved the appointment of Mainasara Ahmad and Abubakar Maikudi, as Commissioners and members of the State Executive Council.

The approval followed a motion moved by Alhaji Bello Ambarura (APC-Illela), which led to the screening of the nominees at the Committee of the Whole House.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) Leader in the assembly, said that the appointment was in line with the provision of Section 192 subsections 1 and 2 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“The nomination arose due to the existence of two vacancies in the State Executive Council.

“This is as enshrined in the Public Service Rules and Regulations as well as other processes as required by the law pertaining to such appointments.

“Moreover, the persons so recommended for the appointments are of proven integrity and dedication. The are people who had served the state and the nation in various capacities.

He said they were equipped to assist Gov. Aminu Tambuwal in discharging his statutory duties.

The members, after screening the nominees, unanimously approved the duo’s appointment in a voice vote after the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, had called for it.

In another development, the assembly gave the assurance that it would have closer partnership with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Sokoto Zonal office in promoting government policies and programmes.

Magaji gave the assurance when the Zonal Director, NTA Sokoto Network Centre, Hajiya Saudat Suleiman, paid a courtesy visit to the assembly.

The Deputy Speaker who represented the Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Achida, said that the partnership between the media and the state legislature was very cordial and would continue to remain so.

He thanked the zonal director for the visit and assured her of the assembly’s commitment to enhancing the services of the media in the state.

Earlier, the zonal director, who is in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, commended the assembly members for their commitment toward enhancing democracy in the state.

She also commiserate with the members on the demise of one of them, late Isa Harisu, who slumped and died when he arrived at the assembly complex to attend the day’s plenary, on Dec. 30, 2019.
