The Niger Government has commended the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), for supporting the campaign to increase enrollment of children in schools in the state.
Dr Adamu Isah, the Chairman of the Niger State Universal Basic Education (NSUBEB), gave the commendation in Minnna on Tuesday.
Isah spoke at the end of a capacity building training for 450 education managers in primary schools across nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
He said that the UNICEF intervention had led to increase in enrollment of children in schools and human capital development in the educational sector in the state.
Isah described UNICEF as “a committed partner’’ and advised participants to use knowledge acquired during the training to sustain what the fund was doing in the state to ensure continuity of the programme.
“As you go back to your places of work, ensure that you use what you have learned to guide children in life skills and encourage them to enroll and complete school,’’ he said.
Hajiya Maryam Usman, a Consultant in charge of access, said the training would enable the participants to ensure that boys and girls enrolled in school and learned some skills.
“The essence of this is to once increase school enrollment of children especially girls and to mentor them on their rights to be in and complete school,’’ she said.
Usman noted that the participants were also trained on how to include Girl for Girl (G4G) activities into their school work plan and to mentor them.
One of the participants, Murtal Kabiru, said they were trained on the basic principles of life for children and how to encourage children enrollment in school.
“This training has improved our knowledge on how well to handle our pupils and to teach them about their rights to education and life skills,’’ he said.
