A school teacher, Mrs Clementine Ani, prayed a Customary Court in Jikwoyi, Abuja, to grant her prayer for divorce, on grounds that her husband, Friday, does not trust her any longer.
Testifying, Ani, who resides in Jikwoyi, said: ” I can’t live under the same roof with this man, he is accusing me of infidelity yet he has three children outside, with another woman.
‘My husband is very violent. He beats me every time, I cannot continue with this marriage”.
The respondent, Friday, who is a school bus driver, in his defence, told the court that the only time he beats his wife was when his wife sleep outside their matrimonial home.
“ On Valentine’s Day, when my wife closed from work, she told me that she wants to go to Karu market I told her to come back before 6 p.m., she said okay.
“But she did not get home till about midnight. I was forced to make dinner for the children they ate and slept. In the morning when we woke up I didn’t see my wife, I prepared the children for school and dropped them off.
“I called my in-laws and told them what has happened because my wife’s phone was also switched off. I and my in-laws went to the police stations to report the case of a missing Person.
“My wife came back in the afternoon, I asked what happened, she said she encountered ”one chance” fraudsters in Karu and they took ”abducted” her.
The driver denied all the other allegations and begged the court not to grant his wife’s prayer, saying “I still want her, she is my wife, the mother of my four children “.
The presiding judge, Jemilu Jega, adjourned the matter until Sept 22, for cross-examination and hearing.
