Two men, John Edet and Abiodun Salisu on Wednesday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged illegal reconnection of their electricity supply.
Edet, 38, and Salisu, 35, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two count charge of conspiracy and interference with the of property.
The defendants both pleaded not guilty to charges.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Aug. 25, at 4:10p.m. at Salisu Street, Obanikoro in Lagos state.
Olaluwoye said that the defendants refused to pay their electricity bills for a few months and were disconnected by officials of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), but later did the reconnections themselves.
“The defendants conspired, climbed the electricity pole and illegally reconnected their light.
Olaluwoye told the court that the IKEDC officials discovered the illegal connection when they performed a routine inspection of their installations.
He said the offences contravened Sections 411 and 340 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015. (Revised).
Section 340 stipulates three years jail term for unlawful interference with property, while 411 caries two years for conspiracy.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adebola Adedayo, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety in like sum.
Adedayo said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of one year tax payment each to Lagos State Governmen.
She adjourned the case until Sept. 24 for mention.
