An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Tuesday ordered that a 49-year-old man, Uchenna Uzoma, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter, be remanded in a correctional centre.
The Chief Magistrate, Peter Nwaka, who did not take the plea of the suspect, ordered that he be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kirikiri, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Nwaka ordered the police to return the case file to the DPP and adjourned the case until Sept. 30, for mention.
Uzoma, who resides at No 40, Alhaji Bashiru St., Ojodu, Berger, Lagos, was charged with defilement.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Christopher John, alleged that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 24, at his residence.
John alleged that the defendant sexually assaulted his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter by defiling her.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes life imprisonment on conviction.
