A 50-year-old man, Emmanuel Nnamani, charged with stealing goods valued at N11.2 million, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant, who resides at Iyana-Ejigbo, Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate Mrs O. A Olayinka, on a two- count charge of threat to life and stealing.
Nnamani, however, denied committing the offences and was admitted to a bail of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.
Olayinka said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in 2018 at Ogba, Lagos.
He alleged that the defendant stole the imported goods belonging to Mr Emeka Nnaji.
“He stole gymnasium equipment worth N5 million; malaria pills of N3.5 million; different types of wine valued at N2 million; a N100,000 Jiahsu generator, gas cooker worth N120,000 and cash of N500,000, totalling N11.22 million.
“The defendant, a friend to the complainant, unlawfully gained entrance into the warehouse and carted away the items,” he said.
Ayorinde said that the defendant also threatened the life of the complainant to kill.
“Nnamani added some substance suspected to be poison into a drink and gave it to the complainant to drink but the complainant survived it,” he said.
Ayorinde said that the offences violated Sections 56 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Section 56 stipulates one year imprisonment for threat to life, while Section 287, prescribed three years for stealing.
The magistrate adjourned the case until Aug. 29 for mention.
