The Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA) Electoral Committee on Tuesday in Awka said elections into the State Board and Local Football Councils were yet to be conducted.
Obinna Dike, Chairman of the committee’s Media/Publicity Sub-Committee, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the electoral was still in progress and just about 95 per cent completed.
He said the process was however suspended on Sunday in order to obey a state government.
“Government had directed that the exercise be suspended because it would violate the laws on curbing the spread of the COVID-19 scourge.’’
Dike nonetheless said the committee was eagerly waiting for the next directive on the issue.
“Efforts were made for us to hold the elections through virtual means, but the state government did not agree with this.’’
He however said they (the committee) were not aware of any election taking place anywhere in the state, and were also not part of any purported election.
“We are still in the process of the election we have been preparing for, and everything was set for the exercise which was scheduled for Monday and Tuesday before the Anambra government stopped it because of the COVID-19 protocols.
“We tried to conduct it through electronic means, but the government refused.
“So, since we cannot disobey the government, we wrote to the AnSFA attaching the position of the government on the election.
“We are not aware of any election anywhere. None of the six members of our committee was at the venue of whatever happened.
“So, our earlier statement still stands and we have duly communicated the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),” Dike said.
The elections committee official said the electoral process had reached 95 per cent and that there was no longer room for anybody who was not part of the process until now.
“Anybody who had not been part of the process cannot come in now. It is a pity that they are just realising this late that the assurances of a free, fair and open process were genuine.
“Nobody can come in again, at least for this election.
“From day one, there have been pressures on us to subvert the process. But we stood our ground to serve the best interests of football and the Anambra people,” he said.
