The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Friday distributed assorted food items to 4,100 displaced persons, taking refuge at Teachers Village Camp in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.
Flt. Lt. Umar Sani, Head of NEMA food distribution in charge of Borno, during the monthly food distribution exercise, assured that the displaced persons would be provided the needed support.
He said that the agency would cover about 38,000 households in 17 camps in the state capital.
“So far, we have distributed the food items to 7,400 IDPs in Bakkassi and now we are at the Teachers Village Camp to distribute same to another 4,100,”he said.
He explained that the exercise was coordinated under the supervision of the Director-General of NEMA, retired AVM Muhammed Alhaji Muhammed.
“It is expected that the food items would go a long way to address some of their immediate needs in the camp.
“We have also worked out modalities to ensure that the food items were not diverted,” he said.
Babagana Yarima, an IDP, lauded NEMA for the intervention and urged the government to flush out the Boko Haram insurgents from their domain, to enable them return to their farming activities.
Yarima said that he was forced out of his hometown, Gamborun Ngala in 2014, noting that, that made him to depend on hand out from humanitarian organisations to survive.
“Farming is our occupation, if we return to our homes, we will be able to farm and be self-reliant,” Yarima said.
Bakura Maigari, another IDP, expressed joy for the timely distribution of food items by NEMA, especially during this period of COVID-19 pandemic.
Maigari urged NEMA to also distribute facemasks and other coronavirus preventive kits in the camp.
