The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Enugu State says it will embark on intensive media campaign against rape and and Gender-based Violence in the state.
The state Chairperson of the association, Mrs Chinyelu Mgbo disclosed this in a message to the 2020 Day of the African Child.
The chairperson said NAWOJ had always been in the forefront of the fight against gender violence including Female Genital Mutilation and widowhood practices.
Mgbo said it would embark on intensive media campaign, advocacy and reportage on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) to create awareness on its dangerous trend especially incessant rape of girls, women and minors.
She commended the National President of NAWOJ, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole for embarking on capacity building of female journalists on Gender reportage adding that it would go a long way in enhancing their professional skills.
In her message, the Acting Vice Chairperson of NAWOJ, South East, Comrade Ngozi Mba called on the National and State Assemblies to enact stiffer penalties for perpetrators of rape including castrations.
According to her, a man that defiles or rapes a five year old or lower should be castrated.
Mba urged parents especially mothers to be extra vigilant with their children adding that they should reduce the rate they pursued economic gains and focus more on their children.
“As we celebrate the day of the African Child ,the Nigeria Association of women journalist South East Zone have called for very severe punishment for those who rape children.
“It is alarming enough the rate at which rape has become the order of the day despite many outcries. But the rape of babies is totally horrible and inexcusable,” she said.
