The Lagos State Government is set to register contractors based on their capacities, to enforce quality assurance and control standards in road construction and rehabilitation.
The Special Adviser to the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, disclosed this while inspecting road projects in Ijede, Agric-Ishawo, Ikorodu and Gbagaga in Kosofe LGA, according to a statement from the government.
Adeyoye said in the statement signed on Wednesday by Mr Adesina Odunuga, spokesperson for the state ministry of works and infrastructure, that the contractors would be grouped into categories.
She said the grouping would depend on their technical abilities to determine the quality and volume of projects each could handle.
According to her, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration had set a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all construction projects and empowered the engineers to take up the challenge.
“Quality assurance is the hallmark of this administration.
“We cannot afford to compromise standards in any project, as all these projects are being financed through taxpayers’ money.
“The only way to compensate them is to ensure they have value for their money,” she said.
She said the inspection tour was in line with the reopening of the economy after COVID-19 lockdown.
“We decided to embark on a tour of ongoing road projects across the state in order to ensure quality control and standards in the delivery of all our projects,” she said.
While inspecting Ijede and Agric-Ishawo roads, the special adviser said that construction works were progressing.
She said that observations made had been passed to the contractors.
The official said the state government would not issue certificate of completion on any road project not done to the required standard and scope.
While emphasising the need for quality project delivery, Adeyoye urged contractors to effect corrections identified by the team, adding that site engineers must ensure contract specifications would be met.
She promised to visit other construction sites, assuring residents of Lagos that the government was determined to ensure timely delivery of projects.
