A Benue State politician, Daniel Ukpera, has sparked controversy after he donated ropes to members of his community.
The ropes, he said, would be used to tie their goats.
The donation came about the time Nigerians are celebrating the Democracy Day and yearning for dividends of democracy.
Reports say Ukpera, who contested for the Guma State Constituency seat in the 2019 Benue State House of Assembly Election under the platform of Labour Party, donated bundles of ropes to the people of Makurdi LGA in Benue State.
He was also said to have assisted the goat owners to tie their goats after the donation.
Gleefully, he also posed for photos with the grateful recipients.
Many Nigerians are, however lambasting him, saying he had reduced political relevance to stupidity.
Yet, some are trying to reason with him, saying he had done what he could afford.
“What if members of the community have been complaining of their goats missing, or owners of little gardens/farms, complaining that the goats having been roaming free, and eating their vegetables and crops? This might be a complain that has gotten to him and as a thoughtful person, he decided to do something about this, in his own capacity. This might be a little gesture, that doesn’t stop him from doing other things. This write up doesn’t even say he is member of the house or holds any position in government- so he could as well, still be finding his feet financially.
“Not everything should be condemned quickly. Besides he says this is his own contribution to the anti grazing law passed. This little gift might end up saving a little quarrel or fight in that community, even though the optics looks ridiculous. Something far more tangible needs to be done for the community, by the government. May God help us to give what we can, to alleviate the suffering of our people and move our communities forward, in Jesus’ Name. Amen,” one McCarthy noted in a comment on Linda Ikeji Blog Spot.
