The COVID-19 lull is not eroding Burna boy’s influence as he has emerged victorious at the 2020 BET Awards.
He emerged winner of the Best International Act, while Wizkid also won an award through his featuring inn Beyonce’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ .
With this, Burna Boy becomes the first Nigerian artiste to win the award back to back.
International model Naomi Campbell announced Burna the winner, in a category that had Sho Madjozi (South Africa), Stormzy (UK), Innoss ‘B (DR Congo), Ninho (France) and S.Pri Noir (France).
The show, which celebrates Black excellence in music, film, sports and philanthropy, was filled with speeches, songs, images of protests and the names of dozens of Black men and women who have died at the hands of police in recent years.
According to Burna in his acceptance speech, Africa must matter.
“I will like to use this opportunity to say that sometime around 1835, there was admission to turn the nation of Africa into a dominated nation. Now is the time to return and go back to the royalty that we were because in order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter,” he said.
