The Bauchi State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed for second reading a Bill tagged Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP).
The bill will also provide maximum protection to victims and punishment for offenders.
Presenting the Bill on the floor of the House, the Speaker, Mr Suleiman Abubakar, said that it does not stop at domestic but extended to political violence.
“This is the time for representatives of the people to do something to provide adequate protection to vulnerable members of the society against violence.
“This bill does not stop at protecting against rape and other domestic violence, but also extend to political violence.
“Many ugly cases are happening within the state, unfortunately some of the culprits go unpunished,” Abubakar said.
Mr Tijjani Ahmed, representing Azare constituency, and Mr Bakoji Bobbo, representing Ciroma constituency in Misau Local Government Area, seconded the bill for the first and second reading,
Members unanimously agreed that the bill be referred to the House Committee on Women Affairs and returned after two weeks for further action.
The VAPP state working group and Attah Sisters Helping Hand Foundation had earlier advocated and presented the draft of the bill to the speaker.
