The Federal Government has officially shown interest in an allegation that flamboyant socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, aka E-Money, is treating his police escorts with disdain.
He is also said not to be entitled to the number of policemen around him.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu,is said to have ordered the probe of the man who is the Chairman of Five Star Group and brother to musician, Kingsley Okonkwo aka K-Cee,.
He is accused of using the policemen like domestic servants.
‘The Punch’ reports that an order was immediately issued to the Lagos State Police Command to withdraw the six policemen attached to E-Money.
“We received a signal from the Force headquarters on Monday that the police detail of music executive, E-Money, be immediately withdrawn and an investigation into the man be launched.
“The IG was surprised that policemen were attached to him in the first place and were being used like domestic servants, carrying umbrellas, opening doors, and doing menial jobs for him.
“The policemen were discovered to be attached to B Operations at the command headquarters and not MOPOL which is the usual practice. So, we have withdrawn his policemen and we are inviting him for questioning. The policemen will also be interrogated,” it quoted a police source as saying.
About a year ago, E-Money was also involved in a controversy when he allegedly presented himself as a recipient of a honorary doctoral award from the University of Lagos.
There was a poster and a scheduled celebration to that effect.
The institution, however, later dissociated itself from the scheme.
In Nigeria, many policemen are abused by privileged people, with some at times seen carrying personal belongings for their ‘masters’, their spouses and other members of the families.
Besides, many of the ‘big men’ are believed not to be entitled to the number of policemen they parade, especially in a country that is agreed to be seriously under-policed.
