Interesting story of how Agege (Lagos) got its name

So, an artiste/artiste gave Agege, a popular area in Lagos its name?
This vast territory consisting of Orile Agege, and Agege station, among others, was founded by the family of Ogunshi, comprising Agbedeyi, and Agbakanmi divisions. They migrated from Iru, an Awori town now in Lekki in c+- 1817. The leader of the migrants was one Efunnukan.
According to oral history, Efunnukan, after consulting the oracle, was told he couldn’t take on fishing profession, that rather he should be an animal hunter and a crop farmer. This advice he yielded to, and thus left Iru with some followers. He had in his delegation one artist who was reputed to be a great drummer, dancer as well as a singer. He also had a huge body, and big buttocks which he would display rhythmically as he beat his drums. As a result, the people named him “Ayoge si Ibadi”, meaning, “someone whose beautifully shaped buttocks enrich his physical appearance”. Now, when people were coming to visit, they would say, “Let us go to Ayoge house”.
Later, the word Ayoge metamorphosed to become Agege.
Agege has risen to become a major bloc, connected to the likes of Pen Cinema, Ogba, Ishaga, Abule Egba and Iyana Ipaja.
It boasts many people of different social classes and ethnic backgrounds.
One cultural monument that also helped to define Agege in the past is no more there: that is the Pen Cinema, which was, some 15 years ago, sold off, only for an eatery and other ventures to rose from its rubble.
Indeed, many who were born in the past one decade only know the area called Pen Cinema without knowing or experiencing the antecedent of the tag.
For one, there is a large population of Northerners in Agege, just as Easterners also command a significant presence there.
A major market by ‘AP’ provides a melting pot for the residents.
It has a local government headquarters, a marriage registry and a General Hospital.
