Worried by incessant water scarcity in Keffi, students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, have begun the construction of a motorised borehole and rehabilitation of two existing ones in communities around the university.
According to Mr Victor Tsaku, President of the institution’s Student Union Government (SUG), the gesture is aimed at addressing water scarcity faced by students living in such communities.
He said on Thursday in Keffi that the projects would cost N1.4 million.
NAN recalls that the students, in 2013, staged a peaceful protest over water scarcity within the school and communities around it.
The protest later turned violent, leading to the death of some students.
Tsaku told NAN that the two moribund boreholes were constructed by the university management after the students protested.
“The water situation is not too bad yet, but by the time students resume for another session in January, it will be tough, that is why we are being proactive.
“The new borehole will cost N800,000, while the rehabilitation of the two existing ones will gulp N600,000,” Tsaku explained.
The students union leader called on corporate bodies, groups and spirited individuals to support the efforts toward ameliorating the suffering of the students,” he said.
