Outrage and shocking revelations are gurgling out following the publication of a story in which BBC documents how some Nigerian and Ghanaian lecturers allegedly demand sex from female students before they can pass exams.
The media organisation conducted the investigation discreetly at the University of Lagos and a Ghanaian institution.
A senior lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Dr Boniface Igbeneghu, is captured on tape making amorous advances at a ‘student’ seeking admission into the school.
Igbeneghu, who teaches in the Faculty of Arts, was caught after a BBC reporter w posed as a prospective student of UNILAG.
Among the people who first ‘broke’ the news is popular lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, who is also a poet.
He noted on Facebook; ‘Department of Cold Room, Faculty of Sexual Harassment, University of SLaygos…’
This sparked suspense and anger, with comments condemning such harassment.
Here is how Twitter is also responding:

Obafemi Awolowo University, Department of English are known for #SexForGrades. I just don’t want to mention names but I can give you evidences of at least 12 English lecturers who still do this nonsense to students. Students can’t speak up because they fear they would never pass

Any lecturer exposed in the #SexForGrades documentary should be sacked, arrested and jailed.

70% of male Lecturers in Nigerian institutions are guilty of demanding #SexForGrades
You only see the ones the media shows you, A lot of lecturers screwing female students lowkey. I don’t think Dr Boniface’s victimization can put a total eradication to #SexForGrades

Watching BBC #SexForGrades documentary and I remembered Eedris Abdulkareem “Mr Lecturer”. He rapped about male lecturers exploiting female students by requesting sex and money in exchange for marks as far back as 2002. Sexual harassment is a norm in Nigeria universities.
@TheIfedolapo
I couldn’t even finish the #sexforgrades video before tearing up.
I remember when I told my parents about the lecturers harassing me for sex.
One kept seizing my papers during tests and arguing that I wasn’t a virgin while promising to “take care of me” for grades.
@nene_ip
don’t always blame the lecturers; some ladies make up their minds on #SexForGrades before they even start school…they “seduce” the lecturers/profs… we all knew 1 or 2 girls who ply this quid pro quo trade#BBCAfricaEye
